How to buy an island?

This is the dream of many people, owning a beautiful island somewhere in a tropical part of the world. Well, there’s news for you, an island can be yours and I’m not only talking to our readers with plenty of cash left after the crisis.

What are the prices for private islands? That depends on the location. Just as in real estate, location is key. Do you prefer an island in Norway, just off the coast of Spain, the Caribbean or near Africa? The typical tropical islands (and matching location) will cost a few more than small islands near let’s say, the North American coast. Think from $ 1,000,000 and up for your tropical dream. A lot less and you can be the proud owner of a sea-surrounded gem anywhere else.

Remote islands are easier to find, but then you need to take transportation costs is consideration. A stylish gentleman like you sure knows how to ride a powerboat and maybe even fly a plane. That helps, but if you don’t you’ll need to hire people to transport you and your friends to your island.

What is on the island? If there’s nothing there (the real deal), good luck. You’ll have to build a cottage, villa or other form of living space using the remainder of your savings. Constructing a building and infrastructure on an island is 1.5 times more expensive than on the main land. Again, take transportation into consideration. You can always go for the “Survivor” option and live, cook, shit and sleep outdoors.

So, why would you want to buy an island anyway? It’s the way of spending your holidays the cool way. Further, there’s nothing like a good story on parties and events. How many people do you know that own an island? It is really exclusive.

If you are not too sure about it, try renting an island for a few weeks to become familiar with the experience. Regarding to the boat and the airplane, every stylish man knows the FFF-rule: if it flies, floats or fucks: rent it. I disagree with the last F, but there’s a truth in the other two F’s.

Good luck with your island-hunt. The best place to start is here: http://www.vladi-private-islands.com.

Derek

Paul Smith The Multi-Stripe MINI Exhibition in Singapore

About the Paul Smith Multi-Striped MINI Exhibition
Originally designed as part of the Great Brits minis the 86 striped, 24 colour car appeared at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show, and inspired a run of limited edition minis. The exterior of the car is painted with the signature Multi-Stripe. The attention to detail continues on the inside with a lime green lined boot and glove compartment and instrument gauges made by a company called Smith, changed the engraving to read ‘Paul Smith’.

The mini has been on many adventures including a tour of the US traveling to San Francisco, Las Vegas and Grand Canyon and finally ending up in Los Angeles. The car also attended the 10th Anniversary for the opening of the Dubai store in the Middle East in 2011.

In 2012, the Paul Smith Limited Edition MINI embarks on its first tour of Asia.

The colourful multi-stripe paint job on the exterior of the car has the unmistakable Paul Smith signature – coupled with vivid pops of colour on the interior that are reminiscent of colours used in various suits seen over many collections.

Other clever twists that are characteristically Paul Smith are hidden in the inside details the glove compartment and boot are lined in a lime green colour and the instrument gauges, made by a company called Smith, have been cleverly changed to “Paul Smith”.

This car is a very cool version of a version cool car. If you are in Singapore, try to see this amazing show!

How to get a haircut?

It seems that men have a lot of problems when it comes to getting the right haircut. Well, here are some essential tips:

1. Go to a good hairstylist once in a while. One that understands your hair, your head, techniques, trends and knows how to make a haircut that suits you. There is a big difference between a hairstylist and a hairdresser.

2. If you go to get a haircut, make sure you are prepared. Check out photos of haircuts you like, try to figure out which style you like. Hey, it’s ok to bring photos to the salon, you won’t look silly. But it might be that the haircut you show is not possible with your hair or head.

3. Meet the person who is going to cut your hair with dry hair. It’s a common mistake that you won’t meet that person until you already have your hair washed by an assistant. Wet hair is totally different than dry hair, the curls can be different, the colour is different and it is a lot heavier than dry hair.

4. Explain what you want but be precise. Discuss with your stylist what you mean. It’s also very common that you say one thing but you mean something else, just because you don’t know the right word for it. If you and the stylist/hairdresser are absolutely sure that you both have the same thing in mind, things probably will go well.

5. There’s no such thing as a round head or a square head. Your head is divided in several areas that all have influence on your haircut. A good hairdresser or stylist should see this.

6. Get some good advice on products. Don’t use the dirty greasy stuff. Your hair needs to get some oxygen, otherwise you will go bald sooner than you expected.

7. If you go bald you should consider getting a really short haircut. Please don’t do a comb-over. That looks totally pathetic, I’m sorry.

Good luck.

Hmm having your hair washed at the salon...

Special thanks to my dear stylist Danny @Rob Peetoom Elandsgracht, she has been cutting my hair for many years now!

Vinçon – A shopping experience in Barcelona

Do you like contemporary design? I know just the place to be, Vinçon in Barcelona. I already wrote about it 2 years ago, but it is really one of my favourites.

This cool shop is housed in a listed building for its architecture and is a great combination between new design and “old” design. Vinçon is treated as a window display so that when you take a walk through it your experience becomes a unique one and different to what you would feel in a department store.

It is located at the Passeig de Gràcia, next to the Pedrera building by Gaudi. Hard to miss I would say.

They have all kinds of homeware stuff, furniture, books, toys and lots of nice gadgets. Visiting this shop might take up more than half an hour if you want the full experience. If you don’t like shopping you still may enjoy this.

You know, there are these shops where it’s hard to leave without having made a purchase. Vinçon is definitely one of them.

Dream Watch

Yesterday I walked along a random jeweler here in Amsterdam, with beautiful watches in the window.
One of them was an IWC. It was a beautiful timepiece, with a black leather strap, and if I had the money I would buy it immediately!

Back home I did some research on that specific IWC Watch. On the IWC website if found the model that I saw in the shop window of the jeweler.  The model’s name is Portofino Hand-Wound and first appeared on the market in 1984. Now 28 years later it is still a beautiful watch with a classic silhouette that will last for ages. Maybe it is the platinum case in combination with the moon phase display. Or maybe it’s the black alligator leather strap (other straps are also available), but this is one sexy watch!

At a certain age every man should own a watch like this. I hope I will when the time is ripe.
For now all I can do is dream about it.

Fashion & Foam

Last week Daniël and I were on a “business trip” in Amsterdam and we had some spare time. We discovered the new Foam pop-up store Fashion &Foam.

Foam is a photography museum in Amsterdam with very cool projects. Every three months there will be a different theme on which they base their collaborations in this unique pop-up store. Now it’s fashion. They have books, prints, magazines and ofcourse photos.

You can go there to browse or get inspired! It’s certainly a cool stop if you are at the Vijzelstraat (nr. 78).

We’re gonna need a bigger boat

So, you are the stylish guy with all the fancy clothes, nice watch, cool house and hot girlfriend. What is next on your wishlist? I’ve found the new item for your collection of gadgets. Internationally renown designer Marc Newson has collaborated with Officina Italiana Design to create an over-the-top Riva Aquariva.

The boat looks cool, using design features such as retro turquoise upholstery and nice faux mahogany. Do you want to have one of these 22 boats? Then it would be wise to visit the Gagosian Gallery in New York or your local Riva dealer. They are only $ 1,500,000. Which is kind of a bargain for such a piece of art.

The Art of Shaving Black Chrome Shaving set

When I shave myself I prefer to do it the traditional way, it feels great and it makes your skin a lot softer. For traditional shaving you need shaving soap, a shaving brush and a razor. Especially  a good brush is essential. Most shaving brushes are made from nylon of pig hair. But real a good shaving brush is made from badger hair. Like this one from The Art Of Shaving. The set contains a badger hair shaving brush, a Gillet Fusion Razor, and a nice holder that will suit nicely in your stylish bathroom.

I just have a cheap shaving set with nylon hairs from the local drugstore but one day I will own a luxury shaving set just like this. Hey, a guy can dream can’t he?

My 5 Spring/Summer Essentials

I know it’s winter and it’s fricking cold outside, but when slowly every store on the planet is coming with their Spring/Summer collection I can’t stop thinking about updating my wardrobe. The following 5 items are in my point of view the ‘essential things’ to have this Spring and Summer.

1 – Tribal print T-shirts are back from the 90’s. Adds a little funkiness to your wardrobe.
Found on www.riverisland.com

2-  Ofcourse a chino, try a color like red, blue or mint green. Found on www.scotch-soda.com

3- Forget flip-flops, most of the time they look hideous and besides women don’t like ugly men toes. Try the espadrilles from TOMS. They come in many different colors and they walk very comfortably. Most important is that with every pair you purchase from TOMS, they will give a pair to a child in need. Found on www.toms.com

4- With every small glimpse of sunshine I like to put op a pair of nice sunglasses. I’m hooked on this one of Persol. Steve McQueen wore a Persol like this one in the movie “Bullitt”.
And who wouldn’t want the look like Steve McQueen? Found on www.persol.com

5- When you are going to the beach or on holiday with your lady you need a nice weekend bag where you can put all your stuff in. This is a good quality bag by Massimo Dutti and it adds a little luxury to your outfit. Found on www.massimodutti.com

Herschel Supply Co. Backpacks Little America

As a student I am a big fan of backpacks. They are useful for dragging around books or a laptop. But if you don’t have the right one you can look kind of nerdy. The backpacks from Herschel Supply are a personal favorite of mine. The look is authentic mixed with a modern feeling.

The bags are made of canvas and have a lot of space for all your stuff and an extra pocket for your laptop or iPad. I’m going to get one soon. If you’re interested in one of these fine backpacks take a look at www.freshcotton.nl.
